Key things to take into consideration are tile grade, strength of tile or PEI rating, area of use so factors like water absorption and frost rating, slip ratings or friction coefficient if available. Most man made tiles will meet your needs but natural stone tiles will need a discussion with your tile salesperson to discuss if the tile selected will work in the user environment.

Tile trends change quite often but natural stone tiles have always been the higher end look that most people desire.  Marble is one of the natural stone tiles that has always been on trend but now there are so many different choices of natural stone tile that the selection process will be more involved.

There are a few basic tips when buying from a tile store. It is wise to select your main tile look, style, colour.  If it is a larger area you may want to add in another tile look but don’t do more than 3 different looks of tile.  Select a main theme or style of tile as the primary look desired.  Depending on the potential traffic area or environmental concerns make sure maintenance considerations are taken into account.  When choosing your primary look or main theme of tile take into the project consideration the scale or size of the area to be tiled.

There are different tips and methods to protect natural stones which increase their shine. Keeping it simple is the best practise. Clean regularly with a broom or vacuum  (pay attention to the bottom of the vacuum attachment so there are no risks to damage from metal parts or black streaks from rubber wheels), if you are using a broom make sure it has stiff bristles but not a hard broom, than complete cleaning process with a mop and warm water with a mild soap. It is wise to not use any acidic chemicals such as vinegar, lemon juice, and abrasive cleaners.  Tough stains can be removed with a mild muriatic acid and water mixture.

These tiles are resistant to germs, bacteria and dust particles. That’s why they maintain their shine for a long time. Care of porcelain or ceramic tiles can be done using a damp sponge mop with almost any household cleaner. You should sweep or vacuum tiles from time to time so dirt is not embedded into grout lines.

You may see cracks on surfaces of tiles. This is a rare situation, but it has different causes. The biggest reasons are when tiles are not fully back-buttered with mortar or not well seated during install.  Other occurrences of cracks may be from heavy solid objects hitting tile floors.

It depends on the type of tiles and the shoe you’re wearing. Many tiles have a better surface for environments that may be wet and become slippery.
